Today marks two and a half years that I've had my SRT-4.
I actually took the picture above about a month ago. I knew I was close to 50,000 at the time, but I didn’t realize it until after I had already rolled past it. But at least I got a picture of the palindrome that follows. I actually have over 52,000 miles on the car now.
Nothing of any real consequence has gone wrong with it. There were a few minor kinks that got ironed out in the now well-expired warranty period, but nothing that has caused me grave concern for the overall quality of the vehicle. I kept my previous Neon past 110,000 miles without anything more major than replacing a fuel pump, so I have good expectations for at least a similar performance from this one.
One change with this car over ones I've had in the past is that I have gone to pure synthetic oil and extended change intervals. Oil and filter get changed at 10,000 miles or 6 months (I rarely actually get to the latter). I’ve been doing this since my very first change, and have seen no ill effects. I even went so far as to send a sample of used oil out to be analyzed after a 10,000 mile interval. The report came back stating that it was still fit to be used, so I was satisfied that all was well.
Had I ordered the car, I probably would have gone with blue instead of black. The black looks fantastic, but it's soooo hard to keep clean. I kind of gave the car a half birthday present today by accidentally waxing it. Accidentally? Yeah. I gave it a full service car wash this morning--inside and out. I had noticed a small scratch a week or so ago, so I figured I'd put a little wax on it while it was clean--hoping to buff it out or at least minimize and/or protect it.
When I got home I put the wax on and then figured that I might as well do the whole panel (trunk lid) so there wouldn't be an oddball waxed spot on it. But once I got done with the whole lid, it looked so nice I decided to just go ahead and do the whole car since it's been since at least last fall since I'd waxed it. I think it took under an hour, so it was well worth the effort. It'll look great overnight and for about five minutes after I drive it out of the garage tomorrow morning. :P Oh well, such is life with a black car...
Also if I had ordered, I might have considered the lower spoiler that they put on the SXT. The high spoiler differentiates it as an SRT-4, but I don't really care about that sort of thing. The car is FWD and I don't have much occasion to go fast enough to make such a thing useful anyway, so I think I'd prefer the less pretentious low spoiler. Besides, the high spoiler occasionally spoils the view in my rearview mirror of the pretty girl in the car behind me. ;)
In addition to winter wheels and tires, I've also replaced the stock tires once. I replaced them with the OEM tires: BF Goodrich g-force T/A KDWs. They're super sticky and handle amazingly. They're definitely the most aggressive tires I've ever had on a car. The only problem is that they wear super fast and get pretty noisy on the road. I'm thinking I may taper back to something a teeny bit more conservative next go around...a little more road and a little less track. These tires just went on last July and will probably be done by the end of this fall. Given that a full set is almost $600, I think I'd like to get something that lasts a little longer.
I’ve quite enjoyed this car, and I’ve obviously done a lot of driving in it to have accumulated so many miles. I really haven't done anything to it tuning-wise. It’s been everything I hoped it would be "right out of the box:" practical, yet still a blast to drive. It makes me all the more sad that the Neon is gone for good.
