I've been at my current job for four years now. In that time, we have reshuffled our cubicles three times for organizational and expansion purposes. People packed up their stuff and moved it into a new space. But for whatever reason, each new floorplan had me in the same place. So in four years, I've never moved.
However, this week our entire office has been moving into another suite in the building. I wasn't going to escape the move this time! I've only had one other job longer than this one--and not by much. I can remember moving at least once in that job. That means that I had four years of stuff to pack up and move to my new desk. That's a long time to accumulate junk.
I've been at least semi-decent at not keeping things that aren't necessary, but my cube seems to have become a storage area for a lot of miscellaneous things that aren't really "mine." There's a lot of computer software, manuals, accesories (i.e. keyboards and mice), and even extra computers just hanging out along with most of the documentation and extra cablilng for our server racks. I took this opportunity to find new homes for about half of that stuff. That makes for a tidier cabinet with some extra space in my new cube.
But now I have to get used to being on the other side of the building, which also means parking in a new spot. Somehow I managed to remember to do that yesterday morning--though I did almost go to the wrong side when I was coming back from lunch.
I started moving everything on Tuesday afternoon. I just went as fast as possible getting everything over to the new space. I didn't bother to organize or sort anything and just sort of dropped boxes and piles in my new cube. I had just barely started putting things away when I had to head out for the day. Here's the view that greeted me when I arrived yesterday morning.
I obviously had my work cut out for me. I initially got my computer hooked up and started to try and do some work, but I kept realizing I needed things and had to go looking through boxes to find them. I decided I wasn't going to get much done if I didn't just take the time to unpack and get settled in. It took about half the day, but I finally got everything put together.
While I was cleaning up I also found the banner that was hanging in my cube when I first started working four years ago. I hung it up for a little nostalgic humor.
Meanwhile, Lissa and I bought new body lotion. I used it for the first time this morning. It has cocoa butter in it. I smell delicious!
