I'm going to be in a production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
csystmrocks asked if I would be willing to audition for the chorus of the production that she is serving as co-musical director on. Apparently they had a shortage of guys to fill roles and she thought of me. I'm not sure if I'm flattered or concerned about the desperation that must exist to call me for a musical role. As I stated in my previous entry, I have no experience, zero training, and even less confidence.
We had a Meet & Greet on Monday for all the cast and crew to get to meet each other and to make some initial announcements. A calendar was distributed with dates for rehearsals, performances, and the like. It rapidly became apparent that this show is going to own my free time (and perhaps borrow against some not-so-free time) for the next 11 weeks.
The production is part of the Wayne Township Community Theater. That means rehearsals and performances will be at Ben Davis High School. Most are a reasonably convenient drive from my office after work during the week. But weekend dates are at all close to home. Between this and the PIU freestyle duo with Shirine in Louisville, I am predicting a lot of late nights and extra mileage on the car through the summer.
A complete cast list was distributed at the Meet & Greet. Of course the principal roles were listed at the top. Underneath were several different groupings like "Temptresses," "Soldiers," and "Ensemble." Underneath of each of those were names of cast members. Then, under the heading "Apostles" I found my name. And next to my name, a character name--Bartholemew.
I thought to myself, "Oh shit...I have a name! This can't be good." I was expecting the safety of numbers in a chorus. Having an actual character name implies that I may be asked to stick out a bit more. However, I have to admit that I've only seen Superstar once at least 10 years ago, so maybe I'm worried over nothing.
Still, Ginger seems to have confidence in me even though the only singing she's ever heard from me was playing Karaoke Revolution. I at least know I'm not tone deaf, but this will all definitely be new for me. I expect to learn quite a lot, and I'm really looking forward to it with nervous excitement...or maybe I just have to pee, I'm not quite sure yet.
