Sometimes, I'm an idiot...

...and I'm not too proud to admit that.

thenarus stopped by for a visit last night.  It was the first time I had seen him in a few months.  It was good to catch up and talk some shop.

We met lissarenee over at Qdoba for some dinner and then came back to the house to, nothing in particular.  We eventually decided that we'd take a crack at installing the HD Radio add-on I had bought for my car stereo.  It had been delievered last week, but I hadn't had a chance to put it in yet.  We decided it would be productive to put it in and were both interested in checking it out since neither of has had any personal experience with HD Radio.

To make a long story short, three hours and two trips to Wal-Mart later, the unit was installed.  As with most car stereo installation projects, it wasn't particularly straightforward.  So I go to try and test it, but I can't get my head unit to recognize it.  We puzzled over it for a little bit and then I decided to consult the manuals and the Internet for some help.  It was then that I came to the depressing (and late) realization that this HD Radio add-on is not actually compatible with my head unit. -_-

This was followed by a brief period of denial over having overlooked this available albeit not particularly prominent piece of information.  Then came a period of frustration over the fact that we had basically wasted the last three hours AND I would now have to uninstall the unit as well.

On the bright side (because there alwyas has to be a bright side for me), at least I cleaned out a lot of clutter that had been accumulating in my car and I was able to reroute some of the wires for the head unit to get them a little more secure and out of the way than they were before.  So I guess it wasn't a complete waste.  I'm just disappointed that a lot of time went into a pretty small benefit and it looks like I won't get to experience HD Radio afterall.  Bummer.

Once I got everything uninstalled and reboxed, we decided to try and do something fun.  We ended up heading down to the basement to play IIDX.  We actually played a lot of 14-key.  I was relieved to find out that I was still reasonably competent even though I haven't played IIDX with any regularity for 3-4 weeks and haven't played 14-key in even longer than that.

My accuracy wasn't particularly remarkable, but I was passing songs at the same and even higher levels than before--including a few full 14-key songs (instead of just Light 14) at Jon's urging.  Jon was a bit out of practice at IIDX in general, but he's still amazingly good.  He also took a crack at 14-key and was pretty darn decent considering it was only the second time he's ever played that mode.

We finally called it a night at about 4am.  He had today off.  I didn't.  I only really got about three hours of sleep going into today, but I've been surprisingly not all that tired throughout the day.  I was surprised.  But I'm going to go ahead and go to bed now so as not to push my luck any further.

Thanks to Jon for suffering through my stupidity with me and for sticking around to salvage some fun out of an extra long evening.
